Embroideries and Vestments at Stonyhurst College

Join us for a special private study day of the collections at Stonyhurst College, Clitheroe, Lancashire. The day will begin with refreshments and a brief tour of the galleries. After a light luncheon, Dr. Jan Graffius, Curator of Collections, will lead us in close study of some of the college’s historic embroidered vestments and garments.

Textiles to be studied include 14th- and 15th-century opus anglicanum embroideries; velvet, damask and cloth of gold vestments; a 16th-century embroidered man’s cap alleged to have belonged to Thomas More; embroideries that have been cut from their original garments or added to later vestments; the Mary Queen of Scots Prayer Book and more.
